“Due to the ongoing war in the region and the sharp devaluation of the lira in Turkey, the prices in the hazelnut market fell sharply,” - the Head of the Georgian Hazelnut Growers Association Giorgi Todua stated.
Giorgi Todua says that farmers have only 10-15% of the total crop left for sale.
"Logistics has become more expensive due to the war ongoing in the region, but when it comes to sales, farmers have only 10-15% of the total crop left. As for the price, compared to last year, hazelnuts cost 2-3 GEL less. Today, the price of one kilogram of hazelnuts is about 4-5 GEL, while last year it cost 7-8 GEL for the same quality. Because of the sharp devaluation of the lira in Turkey and the pandemic, as well, demand for hazelnuts was lower and all this, together, led to the result we have today. With the experience of the past years, the sales process ends by the end of May," Todua said.
Giorgi Todua stated that the goal for all farmers should be to produce premium quality hazelnuts, for which the price and demand are always high.
