Iran is trying to complete the construction of its part of the "North-South" corridor as soon as possible in the area of Rasht-Bender-Enzeli.
The distance from this port of the Caspian Sea to Rasht is 35 km, out of which it has already been built on a 11 km-long area.
The railway section should be put into operation in 2023.
"The cargo will then be shipped to the port of Baku, then - to southern European countries through the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway, which will reduce transit time by up to four weeks compared to the Suez Canal route. The main option is to connect Rasht with Astara by rail, on the border with Azerbaijan, however, its realization has been complicated by various problems," - Railway expert Davit Gochava told Commersant.
