In 2022, the volumes of avocado imports to Georgia are 130% higher than those observed in the same period last year. These fruits were exported to Georgia from the Netherlands and Turkey.
In the first quarter of 2022, Georgia received more than 50% of avocados from Turkey, which increased exports to the country by 5 times.
Georgia bought this fruit in April in the amount of 71 tons. The increase in imports is due to the increase in foreign tourists, who are more aware of the fruit.
Demand for the exotic fruits prompted the locals to do experiment: in 2021, the first commercial avocado garden was planted in Guria. According to Geonuts Company, which owns the garden, the first winter was critical. Although the seedlings were protected from the cold, 90% was damaged by frost.
Despite the negative experience, the company does not stop its activities. First, it will try to preserve the surviving seedlings, and replace the rest with new, frost-resistant varieties.
