According to him, the President of Georgia has a special task in terms of weakening polarization and mediation.
Simultaneously, the Austrian President focused on Georgia's Euro-Atlantic aspirations and noted that the inter-party consensus in this direction is very important in Georgia.
"Georgia has a Euro-Atlantic orientation, we talked about it with the President. It is important to note that all parties in Georgia agree and there is an inter-party consensus on EU integration, which is supported by 80% of the Georgian population. Regardless of the difficulties in other areas, foreign policy is an area of consensus, which is very important and I believe that the full implementation of the Association Agreement will be very important for Georgia. This agreement also provides for free trade between the EU and Georgia and is an important format of our cooperation.
The sustainable development of democratic institutions and the rule of law is also very important areas. We have been supporting Georgia for many years, for example in terms of moving closer to European standards, in public administration and in important issues such as cybersecurity. As you know, local elections have been held in Georgia recently. The international observer mission assessed these elections as largely good, although certain areas need to improve, and their desire is to end political polarization. We also join this hope, but I also want to congratulate President Zourabichvili, she is trying and she has a very difficult task in terms of weakening this polarization and in terms of mediation," said the Austrian President.
He also reaffirmed Austria's support for Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
"Austria supports Georgia's sovereignty and its internationally recognized borders. I mean Abkhazia and "South Ossetia". Austria has been a member of the EU Monitoring Mission for 13 years, which is the only on-site international mission that does not yet have the opportunity, unfortunately, to operate in the territories occupied by Russia. We urge Russia to allow the EUMM to work in both Abkhazia and South Ossetia," - Alexander Van der Bellen declared.
