Georgia is one of the main importers of Russian wheat flour. Relying on the data of the Institute for Agricultural Market Studies (IKAR), almost 1/5 of Russian wheat is exported into Georgia. More specifically, based on the IKAR statistics, a record volume of 875 thousand tons of wheat flour was exported from Russia in 2022, while 259 thousand tons of flour were exported last year. Thus, Russian flour export increased 3.3 times compared to 2021.
As the data from the National Statistics Office of Georgia show, in 11 months of 2022 (data for the full year will be published later), the Georgia purchased 159,023 tons of flour from Russia, which is more than 18% of Russian exports. After the publication of the December data, there is a high probability that this figure will increase to 20%.
As a whole, in January-November 2022, 160,834 tons of flour worth $60.7 million entered Georgia, while last year only 29,294 tons worth $9.1 million were imported.
The list of 5 countries where Georgia bought wheat and rye flour is as follows:
1. Russia - 159,023 tons worth $59.5 million
2. Turkey - 1 120 tons worth $791.9 thousand
3. Italy - 126.8 tons worth $131.3 thousand
4. Kazakhstan - 270 tons worth $98.6 thousand
5. Lithuania - 107.5 tons worth $ 66.5 thousand
To be reminded, the increase in the import of Russian flour was caused by the introduction of the import customs duty on wheat, which is zero in the case of flour.
