The ALDE Party strongly criticized the recent BBC investigation alleging that Georgian authorities used a World War I–era chemical weapon against peaceful pro-EU protesters in 2024. In a statement posted on X, the party called the reported incident “a shocking assault on fundamental rights.”
ALDE urged international partners to limit the transfer of equipment that could be used against civilians and voiced support for an independent international inquiry.
“We support our member parties and the opposition demanding an independent international investigation and urge partners to restrict the transfer of equipment that could be turned against civilians,” the statement read.
The party also reaffirmed its solidarity with the Georgian people, noting, “We’ve stood with the courageous people of Georgia in their fight for a democratic, pro-European future during the past 365 days of protest, and we will continue to stand with Georgia.”
