“As it was expected and now we are sure, a large part of the Georgian civil society showed a responsible and sane approach to the issue of transparency,” - the Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia Shalva Papuashvili writes about this on the social network X.
As Papuashvili notes, 156 foreign-funded organizations have already completed the procedure of registration in the transparency register of the Ministry of Justice.
According to him, this number already exceeds the 136 non-governmental organizations that protest the law on the transparency of foreign influence.
"As expected, and now we have been convinced, a large part of the Georgian civil society has shown a responsible and sane approach to the issue of transparency: so far, 156 foreign-funded organizations have completed the procedure of registering in the transparency register of the Ministry of Justice. This number already exceeds the 136 non-governmental organizations that protest the law on the transparency of foreign influence. Moreover, the registration applications of another 300 organizations are currently under consideration.
All this happened despite threats from several political NGOs and their donors that Georgian civil society would oppose more transparency and accountability.
It also became clear that in March 2023 and May 2024, the groups that came to the streets with violent protests did not represent civil society, but were mobilized by radical political parties, their politicized non-governmental organizations and party televisions.
Real civil society has spoken. Out of more than 30,000 non-profit organizations registered in Georgia, up to 25,000 organizations have been inactive for years. From the active organizations, it seems that about 600 organizations receive foreign funding, and unacceptable transparency was found for only 136 of them. Thus, for more than 75 percent of non-governmental organizations funded from abroad, the transparency law is not a problem. And, despite the wonderful, promised end of the world, the sun still shines on the beautiful villages and cities of Georgia", - the Chairman of the Parliament said.
