
On 31 March, Georgia marks 32nd anniversary of the Independence Referendum Day whereby in 1991 country gained back its sovereignty. This day has become a symbol of the unity, striving and determination of the Georgian nation.
The referendum which was sanctioned by the Supreme Council of the Republic of Georgia was held on the entire territory of Georgia, including Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions, with a turnout of 90.57%. More than 3 million 300 thousand citizens, almost 99 percent supported the restoration of Georgia's independence.
On April 9, the Supreme Council of the Republic of Georgia adopted the act of restoring the state independence and freed Georgia from the 70-year Soviet occupation.
Today also marks the birthday of the first President of Georgia Zviad Gamsakhurdia who would have turned 84.
