30 Years of Georgian Lari
A-
+A

Exactly 30 years ago, on October 2, 1995, the Lari was officially introduced as the sole legal tender of Georgia, replacing the transitional Georgian coupon currency.
Before "Lari" was chosen, several names were considered for Georgia’s national currency, including: Maneti, Georgian Maneti, Marchili, Qarti, Rvali.
Ultimately, "Lari" was selected — an old Georgian word meaning treasure or property, symbolizing value and national heritage.
In 2014, the ₾ symbol was adopted by the National Bank of Georgia (on July 7, 2014). The symbol reflects the unique characteristics of the Georgian alphabet, reinforcing the country's cultural and monetary identity.
