The Parliament of Georgia discussed and adopted the Draft Law on Tobacco Control on its first reading, with 83 votes in favor. The draft law was submitted for summary consideration.
Shota Berekashvili, Chair of the Sector Economy and Economic Policy Committee, provided an explanation, noting that the draft extends the tobacco excise inquiry period until January 1, 2026. This extension will allow businesses to comply with the law and maintain their licenses without suspending operations.
Berekashvili further elaborated on a previous amendment introduced on July 14, 2024, which set new requirements for tobacco manufacturers. These requirements, aimed at ensuring high-tech and standardized operations, prompted the government to develop a resolution detailing the necessary standards. This resolution will guide businesses in re-equipping their operations to meet the new requirements. Given the importance of this issue, an additional amendment to the law was also introduced.
