On January 27, the Georgian Orthodox Church commemorates the Righteous of the Apostles, Saint Nino. To mark the occasion, festive services are being held across churches.
During these services, the vine cross of Saint Nino will be displayed at the Sioni Church, where believers will have the opportunity to pray before it until the end of the day.
Saint Nino was born in the Cappadocian city of Colossae. Her father, Zebulon, is regarded as the Enlightener of France.
Around 323, Saint Nino entered Georgia through the Javakheti Mountains, carrying a vine cross given to her by the Virgin Mary. Through her efforts, Christianity was declared the state religion of Georgia in 326, during the reign of King Mirian and Queen Nana.
The Georgian Church honors Saint Nino twice annually: on June 1, marking her entry into Georgia, and on January 27 (14), in remembrance of her death.
