“By 2025-2032, Georgia, due to its geographical location, will play an important role in solving the energy integration-related tasks planned in the Caucasus (Black Sea Basin-countries) region, which implies the exchange of electricity between these countries and the utilization of Georgia's hydropower resources,” - the Ten-Year Transmission Network of Georgia Development Plan says.
According to the current plan, by 2025-2032, the transmission lines of the power system of Georgia with the neighboring energy systems will be significantly strengthened; the possibility of energy exchange with Turkey will increase to 1050 MW, with Russia to 1600 MW, with Armenia to 700 MW. There is already a possibility of a 700-1000 MW energy exchange with Azerbaijan.
Direct transmission lines "Tao" and "Meskheti" can carry 1500 MW of power, but their total capacity is limited by the total capacity of the direct current DC links from Akhaltsikhe, which will equal 1050 MW after 2030.
"Currently, the electricity exchange is being carried out: from Georgia to Russia, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Armenia and vice versa; also from Russia to Turkey, from Azerbaijan to Turkey passing through Georgia; the transmission lines of the transmission network of Georgia serve to fulfill these tasks, although their capacity is limited depending on the permissible mode parameters of the country's energy system", - the Ten-Year Transmission Network of Georgia Development Plan notes.
